RETAIL AUDIT OF DRUGS IN RUSSIA

Methodology

The research methodology is approved by the Association of International Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (AIPM).

In 2002 Deloitte & Touche audited the quality of "Retail Audit of Drugs in Russia" project and confirmed:
- the compliance of data obtaining and processing to the methodology
- the compliance of mathematical processing and extrapolation to stated parameters

The target of this project is to provide objective data on retail sales of drugs in the Russian Federation. The information in the database includes:

  • sales volumes in value (retail prices and pharmacy purchasing prices)
  • sales volumes in units
  • average wholesale and retail prices
  • manufacturer, INN, trade name, etc
  • sales volumes in DDD (defined daily doses)
  • market indicators - market share, sales increase, purchase index, etc

Regional scope

The 2007 panel covers over 4100 pharmacies - that is 7 % of the general universe.

The panel is sufficient for obtaining reliable data. By our estimates the error for Russia total equals 10%.

Information sources

Drug marketing records received directly from pharmacies are the reliable sources of information on retail sales. RMBC relies on bills-of-lading (nakladnie) submitted by pharmacies.

Panel of pharmacies and data accuracy

The highest level of accuracy of the analysis can be achieved only by including all of the existing stores into the panel, what is impossible to do in reality. That is why in order to provide the ultimate accuracy of the received data, a special panel is formed - a sample of pharmacies which corresponds to the existing pharmaceutical structure. The panel is formed through stratified random sampling and is not modified throughout the project period.

Selection of regions

The first step in forming the pharmacy panel was the selection of regions for monitoring. The regional selection methodology developed by RMBC consists in grouping all the 89 regions of the Russian Federation on the basis of certain macroeconomic factors (population income, welfare, etc.) and their geographical location. Selection of regions inside every group was carried out for the audit so that every group could be represented.

Pharmacy selection in each region

The next step after the selection of regions was forming a panel of pharmacies for each region. The panel represents the total pharmacy network, i.e. all types of pharmacies are included. In addition, the number of retail outlets is sufficient to avoid random mistakes.

Further data processing (extrapolation)

Further on the received data is applied to the whole market segment. This is called extrapolation. In terms of data processing extrapolation means that a "weight factor" (relative weight) is assigned to every retail outlet/region. When the final sales volume is calculated the 'weight factor' is multiplied by the sales figure (the sales volume of the outlet/region).
