Russian pharmacy market in 2007

08.02.2008

According to Retail Audit of Drugs in Russia™ RMBC, the commercial pharmacy market value in Russia grew by 21% in rubles as compared to the previous year and totaled $6.44 Bln (Rbl 164.6 Bln) at wholesale prices and $8.37 Bln (Rbl 213.9 Bln) at retail prices (DLO is not included). The drug realization value in natural terms reduced by 2% on the contrary and accounted for 3.63 Bln packs, which reflects the general tendency of gradual shift from cheap “outdated” generics and “traditional” preparations to more expensive but more safe and effective drugs. Thus, an average price per drug pack at retail prices grew from $1.77 (Rbl 48.3) in 2006 to $2.30 (Rbl 58.9) a year later. An average retail mark-up slightly decreased as compared to 2006 and totaled 30%. On average Russian consumer spent $59 (Rbl 1507) on drugs in pharmacies in 2007.

The Top 10 manufacturers’ list by commercial pharmacy sales value remained stable according to the results of 2007. The six of ten participants of the ranking showed advanced growth rate due to which the cumulative share of the ten leaders grew to 37.6%. Owing to the purchase of the growing Arbidol, the leading national manufacturer Pharmstandart strengthened its position in the list (the 4 place). The new purchase of Pharmstandart in 2007 (Mir-Pharma) will presumably lead to further improving of corporation position in 2008. Advanced dynamics was demonstrated by Bayer Healthcare (+37% in rubles) which experienced M&A as well. The growth rate of Sanofi-Aventis (+15%), Berlin-Chemie (+17%) and Pfizer (+17%) on the contrary was slightly lower than the average pharmacy market figure, in consequence of what the corporations reduced its shares in total retail sales value. The Top 10 list of trade names remained relatively stable as well: the only new participant entered the ranking in the analyzed period – Preductal, in spite of the fact that its growth rate was close to the average retail market figure (+23% in rubles). Arbidol (+38%) and Linex (+48%) demonstrated more noticeable dynamics, due to what the former strengthened its leading position on the market and the latter entered the Top 5 list of trade names by pharmacy sales value. Other trade names presented in the list, excluding Actovegin (+22%), showed slow growth. It is to note that at a time when Essentiale N demonstrated low sales value dynamics as compared to 2006, another hepatoprotector Heptral showed significant growth rate (+43%), due to which it came seriously closer to the 10 Top participants; if the dynamics remains the same it may presumably enter the ranking in 2008. Crataegi tincture left the Top 10 list in 2007.

One new participant entered the Top 10 list of the ATC groups (2nd level) in 2007 as well: due to the noticeable dynamics of Otrivin, Aqua Maris and Xymelin, R01 group Nasal preparations joined to the ranking. The dynamically growing brands from Immunostimulants group (Arbidol, Genferon, Imudon) allowed it to displace the ATC group Vitamins from the Top 3. The A07 group Antidiarreal, Intestinal Antiinflammatory/ Antiinfective Agents ranked below in spite of the fact that its growth rate was leaving behind an average pharmacy market figure (+27%).

Conclusion. Drug consumption through pharmacies considerably grew in 2007, notably leaving behind real population income figure (+10.4%) and the total retail turnover figure (+15.2%) by growth rate in the same period. The structure of the pharmacy market remained comparatively stable, which is proved by slight changes, observed in the analyzed ranking.
