According to Retail Audit of Drugs in Kazakhstan™, in the first three months of 2007 the retail pharmaceutical market of the Republic of Kazakhstan grew by 36% at wholesale prices and 33% at retail prices (in national currency – Kazakhstan tenge). Thus, sales from pharmacies reached $121.3 Mln at wholesale prices and $147.5 Mln at retail prices. Each Kazakhstan citizen purchased drugs for an average sum of just over $9.7, while average price per pack equaled $1.32, with a 22% retail mark-up.
The Top 10 manufacturers by retail sales was stable, having increased their cumulative share to 37%. Sales growth by over 60% in Kazakhstan tenge sufficiently improved the positions of Novartis, Ratiopharm and Solvay; Novartis headed the list replacing Sanofi-Aventis (19%) that recorded slower growth than the market average. Gedeon Richter is also demonstrated low growth rate (+20%); besides, in the first three months of 2007 the retail sales of Bayer Schering Pharma exceeded cumulative sales value of Bayer and Schering AG for the same period in 2006 by only one fourth, and as a result the company moved down the list. The national producer Chimpharm showed significant growth (+62%) and occupied 12th place in the 1st quarter of 2007, mainly led by an increase in retail sales of Pentalgin P and Cef III.

The list of the leading trade names by retail sales value demonstrated significant changes (Table 2). TeraFlu against cold and fever demonstrated significantly high growth and moved to the 5th position during the analyzed period. Another two entrants, Ambrobene and Hylak forte, joined the list by increasing their pharmacy sales by 96% and 65%, accordingly. While Xenical, Essentiale N and Mezym forte were losing their positions, the trade names Cerebrolysin, Fervex and Prostamol Uno, in contrast, increased their market shares and rose to higher positions in the Top 10 list in the 1st quarter 2007. It should be noted that high growth rates of macrolide antibiotic Sumamed (60%) let it come very close to top positions, so in the future it may appear among the Top 10 trade marks.

Due to Fervex growth, the combination paracetamol+ pheniramine+ascorbic acid moved down from 14th to 7th place in the list of the leading INNs and combinations (Table 3). The new Top 10 participant is amoxicillin+clavulanic acid (Augmentin, Amoksiklav). The INNs ambroxol, pancreatin and ciprofloxacin also showed considerable market dynamics (+89%, +46% and +55% in tenge, correspondingly) and increased their shares in the total retail sales. The rest of the INNs fall behind the average market figure by their growth rates, what caused reduction of their shares, while fluconazole (+20%) and cefazolin (+21%) even lost their positions. Slow growth of Xenical and Essentiale N resulted in the INNs orlistat and phospholipides leaving the Top 10 list during the analyzed period.

Over the first three months of 2007 only one new group entered the Top 10 ATC list – Urologicals – largely due to high positive dynamics of the drugs Prostamol Uno and Viagra. Low growth rates in tenge demonstrated by the group Vitamins (+19%) conditioned losing its positions, what may lead to the group’s leaving the Top 3 list.
